UN Secretary General Guterres referred to the Greek Turkish Forum

Activities of the Greek Turkish Forum on Cyprus has been attracting attention since its decision to open its Cyprus Chapter in 2006. The latest reflection of Forum’s continued efforts to encourage communal leaders on their efforts to find a fair, peaceful, and equitable solution through negotiations is the UN Secretary General António Guterres’ “Report on Cyprus” to the UN Security Council.

The report of the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, on his “Mission of Good Offices in Cyprus”, numbered S/2019/883 and covering the latest developments about the negotiation process in the Island, was published on November 14, 2019.

The report, focusing the negotiation process in order to reach a consensus for comprehensive and just settlement in the Island, underlined the support of the Forum to the process. Also, the UN Report highlights the last joint statement of the GTF Cyprus Chapter published on 8 October, in which the GTF members urged two leaders to continue negotiations with the aim of reaching a fair and viable settlement on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality.

In addition, the GTF’s emphasis on the need to protect the already achieved convergences in the Island and its stress on the issue of natural resources in the Eastern Mediterranean as a source of mutual interest and cooperation are also mentioned in the UN Secretary-General’s report. The report of the United Nations Secretary-General on his Mission of Good Offices in Cyprus can be reached at http://greekturkishforum.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/UNSC-2019-Nov.-S2019_883.pdf
